What are the recent developments in rhinoplasty techniques?
In the last decade, there have been significant changes from the suture materials to surgical techniques. Some methods that initially generated great excitement have been abandoned, while others have become more widespread. In my opinion, one of the most significant innovations is the use of ultrasonic osteotomy devices, which allow for a much more controlled and atraumatic bone cutting (osteotomy). The need to open a wider skin pocket to use these devices has also increased visibility and provided better bleeding control, which reduced bruising and swelling. Micro-burrs and ultrasonic rasps have also made interventions on the nasal dorsum and nasal root easier and more precise. The use of thinner tampons with air channels instead of obstructive packs has improved patient comfort. The abandonment of permanent sutures has significantly reduced the risk of foreign body reactions in the long term.
