What is external otitis?
The auricle, external auditory canal, and outer surface of the eardrum constitute the external ear. This short and slightly curved tube can be affected by various diseases, including infectious, allergic, autoimmune, or irritation-related conditions. Infectious external otitis may be caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses. Infections or inflammatory conditions of the external ear is called “external otitis”.
While short-term (acute) infections are generally more common, long-term (chronic) external otitis can also occur. Chronic cases are often due to underlying issues conditions as narrow canal, skin problems, immune deficiencies, or habits like ear picking.
