The external device of the cochlear implant system.
The flat round part is the antenna. It is held in place by the magnet of the internal device. Behind the ear, there is the hearing aid-like unit that houses the battery and processor, collects sounds with its microphones and wireless connection features, and transmits them to the internal component.
“May it be a light to you in dark places, when all other lights go out…”
Cochlear implants can be fitted to adults who do not benefit sufficiently from hearing aids or whose speech understanding scores cannot reach desired levels despite the best treatments. Unlike babies, adults, who already know how to speak, begin to experience benefits much more quickly after implantation.
